Does Kindle Have Reading Stats? What You Actually Get

Kindle has some reading stats, but they're hidden and incomplete. Here's exactly what's available and how to fill the gaps.

The short answer

Sort of. Kindle tracks your reading behind the scenes, but it doesn't give you a proper stats dashboard. What you get depends on whether you use the Kindle device, the app, or the web reader.

Reading stats on the Kindle device

On the device itself, your only "stat" is the estimated reading time. Tap the bottom of the screen while reading to cycle through:

  • Time left in chapter
  • Time left in book
  • Your current location or page number

That's it. No history, no trends, no totals.

Reading stats in the Kindle app

The Kindle app (iOS/Android) is slightly better. In some regions, you'll find Reading Insights under the More menu. This shows:

  • A daily reading streak
  • Minutes read today
  • A simple weekly chart

It's basic but at least it acknowledges that readers might want to know how much they're reading.

Reading stats on the web

At read.amazon.com, you can see your library and some highlights. But there are zero reading statistics — no charts, no history, no analytics.

What readers actually want

Based on what people search for, Kindle users want:

  • Total books read per month or year
  • Time spent reading over time
  • Highlight and note counts per book
  • A way to search all highlights across books
  • Export options for their reading data

Kindle provides none of this. It's a reading device that doesn't help you understand your reading.

The My Clippings.txt workaround

Every highlight, note, and bookmark you make on Kindle gets saved to a file called My Clippings.txt on the device. Connect your Kindle via USB and you can copy this file.

It's a plain text file and it's messy, but it contains your entire annotation history. Upload it to Clippings Store to turn it into a searchable, organised library with real statistics about your reading.

Frequently asked

The questions people ask most.

Kindle tracks your reading speed and progress per book, but doesn't give you aggregate stats like total hours or books per month.

No. The closest thing is Reading Insights in the Kindle app, which shows a streak and daily minutes. There's no full dashboard.

Upload your My Clippings.txt file to Clippings Store. It organises all your highlights by book and makes them searchable.

You can export your highlights via the My Clippings.txt file. For reading time and speed data, Amazon doesn't provide any export option.
