Amazon Kindle Reading Insights: What It Shows and What's Missing
Kindle Reading Insights gives you a streak and daily minutes. Here's how to access it and what it doesn't tell you.
What is Kindle Reading Insights?
Reading Insights is a feature in the Kindle app (iOS and Android) that shows basic reading statistics. It's Amazon's attempt at giving readers some data about their habits.
It's not available on the Kindle device itself or on the web — only in the mobile app.
How to find it
Open the Kindle app on your phone. Tap More (bottom right) then look for Reading Insights. If you don't see it, your region may not have it yet — it's been rolling out gradually since 2022.
What Reading Insights shows
Reading streak
The number of consecutive days you've opened a book and read. Similar to Duolingo's streak mechanic — it's designed to keep you coming back.
Minutes read today
A simple counter showing how many minutes you've read today. Resets at midnight.
Weekly chart
A basic bar chart showing your daily reading minutes over the past week. No monthly or yearly view.
Books finished
A count of books you've completed. Simple and straightforward.
What's missing from Reading Insights
Reading Insights is a start, but it leaves out a lot:
- No monthly or yearly totals — you can't see trends over time
- No highlight or note statistics — how many annotations have you made?
- No per-book breakdown — which books did you spend the most time on?
- No export — you can't download your reading data
- No web access — only works in the mobile app
For a company sitting on this much reading data, the feature feels minimal.
Getting deeper reading analytics
Your Kindle highlights contain more insight than Reading Insights ever will. Every passage you highlighted is a signal about what matters to you.
Upload your My Clippings.txt file to Clippings Store to get:
- Highlights organised by book
- Search across all your annotations
- Tags and categories
- Export to Notion, markdown, or CSV
